Nigeria is a joke but INEC is a bigger joke!
Presidential election in Nigeria was scheduled to hold on Saturday Feb 16th 2019. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the voting exercise is postponed to the following week.
INEC announced at 2:43am on Saturday morning, when most Nigerians were still sleeping to announce that the election will no longer hold on the said date.
A signed statement released by the electoral commission chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, reads
“Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible.”
Consequently, Professor Yakubu said February 23, 2019 is the new date for the Presidential and National Assembly election.
The governorship and state assembly elections will now hold on March 9, 2019.
That’s it! That’s all the reason they gave for postponing the elections. INEC did not issue any apologies for the inconvenience caused by this irrational last-minute decision. National youth corp members were subject to very inhumane living conditions because they volunteered to assist with conducting the election.
Some of these youths risked their lives; no accommodation, no security, no food. Yet, INEC couldn’t not apologize to these volunteers.
Businesses and other individuals cleared their calendars, some couples even changed their wedding dates to accommodate the elections.
The lack of regards for citizens is frustrating Nigerians. The government doesn’t respect us, and INEC changes election date without any concrete reasons beside “logistics.”
This postponement should not deter Nigerians from voting next week. It should even push voters to truly vote for their desired candidate.
This election should be a referendum on the government and its policy but we know this is Nigeria where anything can happen.
