How often should I change or replace my sponge?
In spite of the type of sponge you use, it is important to change your sponges regularly. Why? Because it reduces mold and bacteria. How often you should replace it varies – based on where you live.
Warm environments tend to grow bacteria; therefore, people living in warm or hot terrains need to change their sponges more often than others living in cooler areas. Some people use the same sponge for a year or more. This is not hygienic.
If you do not change your sponges regularly, then it can affect your skins and lead to skin conditions. These bacteria spread and grow. Also, they can live on the skin and cause infections and rashes.
Misuse of sponges is one of those subtle habits that, if corrected, will make a big difference.
TIPS: Store your sponges properly; clean the bowls or containers where they are kept, and change them every 2 to 3 months. In addition, do not forget to squeeze out water from your sponge after use and allow it to dry before storage. If you want to be extra cautious, you can also disinfect your bath sponge every few days.
According to a fitness magazine, Dermatologists recommend that you trash a foam sponge or loofah after three to four weeks, since it easily grows bacteria in its crevices. Throw away a mesh bath sponge after eight weeks because it is more resistant to bacteria.
If money is an issue, visit a local donation center, church, or shelter for free hygienic product. Also, most mesh sponges cost about $1 and change. Happy bathing!
