Throwback Thursday: Yvonne Chaka Chaka – Umqombothi

This song brings back memory of growing up in Naija. Today’s Thursday Throwback features South Africa’s legendary singer, Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Although unsure of what was being said, the tune was catchy and everybody – young and old – sang along.

“Umqombothi” was Yvonne’s major hit that launched her out and introduced her to Africa and the rest of the world. This song was bigger than “I’m In Love With A DJ.”

The music video was recorded in October 1986 at several locations including Johannesburg and Heia Safari Ranch near Muldersdrift. It was directed by Roy MacGregor and produced by Pierre Hinch for S&H Films.

The goal of the video and song was to show a snapshot of some social commentary disguised as celebration. After all, it was the apartheid era in South, and little dissent could be shown on TV.

Enjoy and sing along.
