‘Transabled’ – Disabled by Choice….Literally

You’ve heard of Transgenders. But have you heard of “Transabled”.

There is a new wave of people sweeping the united states. People are cutting off their body parts to become disabled. I remember when I first read the story of a man who called himself Jason, the one hand man, I was appalled. So, here is the full story:

“When he cut off his right arm with a “very sharp power tool,” a man who now calls himself One Hand Jason let everyone believe it was an accident. But he had for months tried different means of cutting and crushing the limb that never quite felt like his own, training himself on first aid so he wouldn’t bleed to death, even practicing on animal parts sourced from a butcher.

“My goal was to get the job done with no hope of reconstruction or re-attachment, and I wanted some method that I could actually bring myself to do,” he told the body modification website ModBlog.”

That does not sound normal, I told myself. How can a fully able man believe that he should not have a working, fully functioning limbs. As a result, he eliminates it. However, Jason is not the only one. Some Canadian researchers looked into the issue and published their finding. Apparently, Jason’s perspective is a disorder.

So, the researchers call this disorder, Body integrity identity disorder (BIID, aka amputee identity disorder)[1]. It’s a psychological disorder where a healthy individual feels that they are meant to be disabled. Its friend,”Transability”, is an almost identical disorder. It is medically recognized by the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5t; BIID is not. BIID is related to xenomelia, “the dysphoric feeling that one or more limbs of one’s body do not belong to one’s self”.

In other words, both BIID and Transability happens when a normal person “feels” like they are supposed to be disabled.

Most of the patients…and I cautiously but intentionally say “patients”…are men. Half of them are located in Switzerland and others live in Germany and some parts of Canada.
